EarthBound, known as Mother 2: Gyiyg Strikes Back (Japanese: マザー2 ギーグの逆襲 Hepburn: Mazā Tsū: Gīgu no Gyakushū?) in Japan and alternatively titled EarthBound: The War Against Giygas!, is a 1994 role-playing video game co-developed by Ape and HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System video game console. It is the second game in the EarthBound video game series, following the 1989 Japan-exclusive Mother. It was directed, produced, and written by series creator Shigesato Itoi. EarthBound was first released in Japan on August 27, 1994 and then in North America on June 5, 1995.

Despite its poor sales figures, the game has been lauded by gamers for its humorous depictions of American culture and parody of the role-playing video game genre, and has since become a cult classic. A sequel to EarthBound for the Nintendo 64DD, titled EarthBound 64, was in development for many years before finally being canceled. This project later resurfaced as a Game Boy Advance title called Mother 3 and was released only in Japan. A compilation video game containing both Mother and EarthBound was released in Japan as Mother 1 + 2. EarthBound was re-released on the Wii U Virtual Console in Japan on March 20, 2013 and was released for North America and, for the first time, Europe and Australia, on July 18, 2013.

The CompletionistEdit

On February 28th, 2014, Jirard released the third episode of Fan Appreciation Month: EarthBound! This weeks game was sent in by a fan named "Patrick Gerzie," who also sent in Legend of Mana and Mega Man Legends 2.

In the opening sequence, Greg, Alex, and Frazier are playing with yo-yos. Jirard walks in to object to a bit in the script in which he gets hit in the balls with yo-yos in the opening sequence. He then leaves to get them beers before Belated Media comes in to ask if hitting Jirard in the nuts is still going to happen, which they confirm will still happen.

Jirard compliments the game's strange story and theming as perfect for an RPG. But he notes how the graphics aren't too impressive for the time. He's forgiving of this though, because of its use of art direction, theming, and personality. Greg, as usual, gushes over the soundtrack. As for navigation, Jirard appreciates the simplicity in talking to people and items with the R button. Though he otherwise finds the RPG gameplay simplistic and as not pushing any boundaries. He finds the battle sprites more engaging as a whole.

As a whole, despite its flaws, Jirard considers the game a masterpiece, and worth completing it despite no completion bonus or really anything to complete outside the main story.

  • Jirard streamed the entirety of his EarthBound play-through on his Twitch Channel
    • He renamed Jeff "Gerg" as per viewer request
