Earthworm Jim is a 1994 run and gun platforming video game developed byShiny Entertainment and published by Playmates Interactive Entertainment, featuring an earthworm named Jim in a robotic suit who battles evil. Created by Doug TenNapel and designed by David Perry, the game was released for the Sega Genesis in 1994, and subsequently ported to a number of other video game consoles.

The game was noted for its fluid, cartoon-like animation and 'off-the-wall' humour. It was well received by critics, and received a sequel,Earthworm Jim 2, in 1995. Fifteen years later, Gameloft developed a high definition remake for thePlayStation Network andXbox Live Arcade, titled Earthworm Jim HD, in 2010.

The Completionist Edit

Jirard plays the HD rerelease of Earthworm Jim on the 102nd episode of The Completionist. As a first for the show, he compares it with the original Genesis version.

As a first-time player, Jirard finds the game incredibly weird. He also finds it a bit jarring that the original game does not convey the story outside its manual. The HD rerelease does contain comic book style panels that tell the story, so he gives a point to the HD version.

Jirard compliments the graphics and animation of the HD version, though admits that some fans prefer the original because the HD version doesn't replicate everything exactly. He also loves the music, preferring the Genesis style of music. As a whole, Jirard thinks the HD version is faithful to the original, despite cutting two levels.

Jirard likes the gameplay, especially the way Jim's suit uses Jim as a whip. He does criticize some design choices with the whipping and shooting, though. The HD version is faithful to these choices, which starts to lose Jirard. In a lot of ways, the game lacks cohesion for Jirard too.

Jirard appreciates the cheat codes on the Genesis version, but finds the extra levels are not worth aiming for in the HD version, and the achievements/trophies are not fun, especially the no-death run and speedrun. As a whole, he finds the remake superior to the original, despite not having played the game much before.

Trivia Edit

  • Jirard and Greg went to the same college as Earthworm Jim creator Doug TenNapel, Cal State Fullerton.
