Splatoon is a third-person shooter video game developed and published by Nintendo for the Wii U, which was released worldwide in May 2015. The game centers around characters known as Inklings—beings that can transform between humanoid and squid forms, and hide or swim through colored ink sprayed on surfaces using gun, bucket, or brush-based weaponry. Splatoon features several game modes, including 4-on-4 online multiplayer, and a single player campaign. Splatoon was developed by Nintendo's Entertainment Analysis & Development division, and originated from having a competitive multiplayer ink-based territory control game, which was later expanded to include squids and the ability to swim through the ink. The concept was created by lead programmer Shintaro Sato, who had previously worked on titles in the Animal Crossing franchise. The development team for Splatoon was generally composed of younger Nintendo employees compared to other titles by the company.

The Completionist[]

For this review, Jirard only analyzed the multiplayer aspects of the game, so the controls and story aren't really discussed. What is discussed, though, include the various multiplayer gamemodes and leveling up.

Leveling up was something that Jirard found to be frustrating, as the latter half of the levels took an insane amount of wins to receieve the amount of experience needed, especially when losing resulted in the loss of some experience. But he is thankful that this was the only part that required any grinding.

And the upgrading of each weapon and piece of clothing (on top of buying them all) was something that seemed to make Jirard furious, as there were hundreds of items that each needed leveling up (some items up to four times).

Much to Jirard's dismay, there was no completion bonus for anything that he did for the multiplayer.

Stats[]

  • 50 Levels maxed out
  • 10 Ranks painfully climbed to
  • Over 11,160 Battle points earned
  • Over 1,500 Matches played
  • 13,527 Deaths
  • 60 Amiibo missions completed
  • 257 Pieces of gear collected and fully upgraded
  • 276 Hours of multiplayer playtime
  • A couple of performances from Callie and Marie that warmed Jirard's heart

Trivia[]

  • Because of the fact that Splatoon's multiplayer wasn't fleshed out with the public during Jirard's first video of Splatoon, this video is dedicated entirely to the multiplayer aspect of it. As such, the video skips straight to the 'The Battle' section after the opening.
  • Tower Control is Jirard's favorite mode because of the chaoticness of it, as well as the fact that the losing team can make an easy comeback.
  • Jirard discusses the Splatfests that used to be featured in the game. However, as of now, Splatfests for the first Splatoon have been discontinued.
  • Jirard decided to combine his views of both the story and the multiplayer to give the game as a whole his Completionist rating of Finish It!
