Kirby's Dream Land (星のカービィ Hoshi no Kābī, "Kirby of the Stars"), is a 1992 third party platformingvideo game developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo for the Game Boy handheld game console. It was first released in Japan on April 27, and four months later was released in North America on August 1. It is both the first video game in the Kirby series and the debut of the Kirby character. Kirby's Dream Land was designed byMasahiro Sakurai, who intended it to be a simple game that could be played and beaten by beginning gamers while offering optional challenges for advanced gamers.

As the inaugural Kirby title, Kirby's Dream Land created many conventions that would appear in later games in the series, including Kirby's basic moves. However, Kirby's trademark "copy" ability would not appear until Kirby's Adventure, released less than one year later. Kirby's Dream Land was re-released for the 3DS's Virtual Console service in 2011. It is also one of the games included in the compilation game Kirby's Dream Collection, which was released to celebrate Kirby's 20th anniversary.

The Completionist[]

Jirard reviewed Kirby's Dream Land, the only Kirby game he had ever played, for the sixty-fourth episode of The Completionist.

Jirard finds the plot ridiculous, but fun, and finds Kirby's physique to be weird for a video game protagonist who isn't exactly relatable. Though he finds the graphics to be good by Game Boy standards. Despite finding the level design to be creative and imaginative, he's disappointed by the game's short length.

Jirard finds the eating mechanic and floating mechanic to be solid, and as adding to the gameplay. Though he likes the bosses, he's disappointed that the last level is a recap of the first four levels. Their short length makes them less of an outrage for Jirard, though.

Jirard does like the idea of having a hard mode unlocked after completing the game once, but wishes it wasn't available from just knowing the code.

Trivia[]

  • In the review, Kirby is given the nickname of "The Mallow of the Marsh Variety."
