Link Pokemon Gold, Silver, and Crystal

Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal are handheld RPGs made for the Game Boy Color (though Gold and Silver are still playable on the Game Boy). Gold and Silver were released in Japan in late 1999, and in North America in late 2000. Crystal was released in Japan in late 2000, and in North America in mid 2001. They are sequels to Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow, and make up what is considered the "Second Generation" of Pokémon.

The Completionist[]

Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal were reviewed by The Completionist on June 7th, 2014. It acts as a sequel to the Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow episodes from 2012. Jirard plays through Pokémon Gold for the first time. Special guest Jwittz plays Silver for the video, and PokeKellz of The Dex plays Crystal. Jirard picked Cyndaquil, Josh picked Totodile, and Kellie picked Chikorita. This is the second main series Pokémon review done by The Completionist.

Jirard finds the rival of Gen 2 more interesting than the one from the first games. Though the three find the games to be very similar to the first game in general, they feel these games look better due to having a bigger color pallet.

The three find the gameplay is mostly improved from the original. The new Pokémon and Time Capsule mechanics are brought up, along with the addition of Steel and Dark types, among other tweaks. Jirard finds all the new additions a little overwhelming, but is thankful for most of it.

Like with the previous Pokémon review, Jirard, Jwittz, and Kellz compete to catch every Pokémon faster. In the end, Jirard completes Gold in 163 hours and 22 minutes. Jwittz completes Silver with 98 hours and 46 minutes. Due to Crystal being an even bigger game, and due to playing mini-games and breeding, Kellz takes 191 hours and 32 minutes to complete Crystal.

Trivia[]

  • Jirard and Jwittz's footage of Gold and Silver is butchered due to playing on the Super Game Boy. The color pallet looks more like Generation 1. Kellz's footage for Crystal, however, looks as intended due to recording off the GameCube's Game Boy Player instead.
  • Jirard's Pidgey caught Pokérus during his playthrough of Gold.
  • Kellz caught a shiny Crobat during her playthrough of Crystal.
  • The three were able to obtain Celebi thanks to fan Kyle VanAmber.
