Until Dawn is an interactive drama survival horror video game developed bySupermassive Games and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 4. It was originally scheduled to be released on thePlayStation 3 and featurePlayStation Move support, but in August 2014, the game was reintroduced as a PlayStation 4 exclusive, and was released worldwide in August 2015.

Until Dawn was met with a positive critical response upon release, with praise directed at the visuals, 'choice' mechanic, horror elements, music, characters, voice acting, and gameplay design. Most of the criticism the game drew concerned the second half of the story, the camera angles, character movement, and the game's partially linear plot.

The Completionist Edit

Jirard reviewed Until Dawn for the 149th episode of The Completionist. He reviews the game alongside Alex, Jesse Cox, and Michael Davis, who make up Scary Games Squad.

Alex praises the game’s presentation as being very reminiscent of a horror movie. Davis praises the game’s seamless transition from gameplay to cutscene, and Jesse praises the audio. Jirard appreciates the usage of many different kinds of horror.

The four find the Butterfly Effect gameplay tense and appropriate, finding it an interesting way to make the game engaging. Some other features, such as the premonition totems and “don’t move” mechanic, also receive some praise for their immersion. However, Jesse notes that the narrative overall is more important than the gameplay.

Jirard finds value in collecting the totems and clues, as they add to the game’s backstory. Though everyone notes that the trophies require multiple playthroughs.

As a whole, Jirard doesn’t find the game that hard. The four appreciate the game as a fun party game.
